Learning & Development Manager, Patient Navigation

This position will provide learning design, content development, evaluation, and facilitation support as a member of the American Cancer Society’s Patient Navigation department. This department is comprised of teams that provide navigation training, implementation support, and direct navigation to patients and caregivers, including ACS LION (Leadership in Oncology Navigation) and ACS CARES (Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support).

As a strategic partner to the Patient Navigation team, the Manager will play a key role in shaping learning strategies that align with broader organizational goals. This role requires not only expertise in learning design but also the ability to build relationships, adapt quickly in a dynamic environment, and actively collaborate across teams to create impactful, responsive learning solutions. This role is ideal for a learning professional who combines instructional design expertise with a strategic mindset and a consultative approach. The ideal candidate is energized by cross-functional collaboration, comfortable with iterative content development, and brings flexibility and responsiveness to a rapidly evolving environment.

Responsibilities include designing, developing, and implementing enriching learning experiences. This position will evaluate the results of learning programs and take appropriate action to ensure materials are high quality and meet learning outcomes, follow adult learning principles, current industry trends and best practices. They will partner with subject matter experts, business leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure learning programs meet business objectives and drive our mission, vision, and values.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Leveraging their expertise by demonstrating principles of adult learning, performance consulting, and instructional design for both e-learning and in-person delivery, the Manager, Patient Navigation Learning and Development, will lead all phases of the training design life cycle for robust learning solutions to build capability and support behavior change.

  • Content Development    25%
    • Design learning content and learning programs to foster development of competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities to support patient navigation.
    • Collaborates in interactive content development processes, demonstrating openness to feedback from multiple stakeholders and balancing learning integrity with operational realities.
    • Quickly synthesize and write learning content based on input from subject matter experts, written material, previous training courses, and interviews.
    • Consults with stakeholders to identify learning needs and design learning experiences that align to organizational goals to match identified needs.
    • Design and develop learner and facilitator materials following instructional design best practices (i.e., facilitator guides, participant workbooks, learner/manager toolkits or quick reference guides, managers checklists and other sustained learning tools)
    • Regularly review existing learning content to maintain relevance, accuracy, and remain responsive to developing trends and industry best practices.
    • Exposure to credentialing standards or experience supporting training aligned to credentialed or certifying bodies is a plus, though not required.

  • Training Development    25%
    • Creates online self-paced learning modules, virtual and in person instructor-led training, and supporting learner and facilitator materials following instructional design best practices.
    • Apply a working knowledge of adult learning theory.
    • Designs and implements appropriate reinforcement tools and resources that enhance retention and aid in learning transfer including manager discussion guides and toolkits.
    • Follow necessary processes to upload content to the Learning Management System and support internal knowledge management using shared drives and systems.
    • Optimizes the utilization of the Learning Management System by understanding the full functionality and capability of the system, including learner management and reporting tools.
    • Supports learner technical assistance.

  • Assessment Development          5%
    • Develops module knowledge check questions and curriculum assessment questions that align with learning objectives and allow the learner to demonstrate knowledge and competency.

  • Evaluation           10%
    • Develops and implements evaluation strategies to measure the effectiveness, behavior change, and ROI of learning solutions, ensuring alignment with learning objectives and organizational outcomes.
    • Applies established learning evaluation models (e.g., Kirkpatrick Model, Phillips ROI Methodology) to guide strategy and reporting.
    • Designs and deploys data collection instruments such as surveys, interviews, observation protocols, and focus groups to evaluate both implementation fidelity and learning outcomes.
    • Gathers, analyzes, and synthesizes both quantitative and qualitative data to assess impact, identify trends, and recommend improvements.
    • Translates evaluation findings into actionable insights and communicates results to internal and external stakeholders through clear reports and presentations.
    • Supports continuous improvement by incorporating evaluation data into learning solution refinement and future program design.

  • Facilitation          20%
    • Deliver best-in-class facilitation utilizing a full range of modalities including physical and virtual classroom, eLearning, and social and collaborative learning techniques.
    • Utilize effective training techniques for managing participants, engaging in a variety of learning preferences, creating an effective positive learning environment, and managing challenges.

  • Project management       15%
    • Provides project management for curriculum and training development to ensure deliverables are met in a timely manner.
    • Manages vendor relationships by providing the necessary oversight and consultation on the design and development of learning solutions.
    • Performs miscellaneous navigation project-related duties as needed.
    • Thrives in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple projects with agility while maintaining a learner-centric approach. Comfortable working through ambiguity and adapting solutions as needs evolve.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred Degree: Master's Degree in Instructional Design or a certificate in Instructional Design from ATD or equivalent professional organization
  • Certificate(s) or License(s): Professional certifications such as APTD, CPTD (formerly CPLP), or equivalent are highly valued. Certificates in Evaluating Learning Impact and Writing for Instructional Design are also considered beneficial.
  • Years of experience: Proven knowledge and 5+ years’ experience in instructional design, adult learning, learning & development program design and delivery, or related roles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

  • Strong background in instructional design and development with a learner-centric mindset and demonstrated ability to translate complex subject matter into engaging, effective learning experiences. Successful candidates will be able to share a portfolio of their work to demonstrate their expertise.
  • Expertise in adult learning principles, learning needs analysis, and instructional design methodologies.
  • Strong technology competency in learning design tools including but not limited to: Microsoft Office 365 (including MS Teams, PowerPoint, SharePoint), Adobe Creative Suite, Articulate 360, Vyond, Canva, Session Lab, Filmora, Wellsaid Labs, Noun Project, Miro or Mural. Willingness and ability to quickly learn and adopt new tools to maintain best-in-class learning solutions.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing learning solutions to support eLearning.
  • Experience designing and developing learning solutions in multiple modalities that satisfy the needs of a diverse set of learners (to include instructor-led training, eLearning, virtual instructor-led training, webinars, interactive modules, video, performance support, etc.)
  • Ability to utilize instructional design methodology to design, develop and/or deliver blended learning solutions that are engaging, activity-based and results-oriented.
  • Experience monitoring and measuring learning program effectivenes.s
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set and meet deadlines and maintain schedules for deliverables related to multiple projects.
  • Ability to think strategically and execute plans to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret data and make data-driven programmatic decisions.
  • Solid project management skills and the ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused manner.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
  • Proven relationship management with key stakeholders, peers, and team members demonstrating highly effective interpersonal skills, multi-tasking skills and ability to remain highly motivated in changing circumstances.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all staff and business leaders at all levels and provide strategic guidance in a collaborative, consultative and positive manner.
  • Excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to write effective copy, instructional text, audio scripts/video scripts.
  • Able to operate in a team environment that holds individuals accountable for results.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strives for continuous improvement – ability to openly provide and receive feedback effectively.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Limited domestic travel (i.e., annual in-person team meeting).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

The starting rate is $81,000 to $98,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory fa including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
