Direct Mail Manager

The Direct Mail Manager manages and delivers the American Cancer Society’s mass market direct-to-consumer mail campaigns that target the acquisition of new donors and reactivation of deeply lapsed donors.

As a key member of the direct mail team, this individual will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end management of the Acquisition direct mail program. This role focuses on executing full-cycle direct mail campaigns with a strong emphasis on strategies that drive revenue growth, expand the customer file, and diversify the target audience. The individual will also lead the development and execution of Acquisition testing strategies, manage campaign budgets, and monitor performance to ensure optimal results.

Direct responsibility of the Acquisition direct mail budget, including $6MM in annual revenue.

​​MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing strategies that focus on acquiring profitable new donors through the acquisition of other non-profit list share or list purchase, and the reactivation of deeply lapsed ACS donors.
  • Manage the vendor partners supporting the acquisition program, providing direction on programmatic goals, marketing, fundraising content and ACS-brand and mission messaging.
  • Work in concert with vendors on expense forecast and revenue projections for monthly appeals, managing the program’s budget, including invoice processing and postage reconciliation.
  • Responsible for the Acquisition direct mail program from strategy execution, including creative development, review and proofing, segmentation and file audits, list management and mail plan approval, print production and postage management, results and performance analysis.
  • Facilitate communication and problem resolution between vendors, donations processing, and other production and processing channels.
  • Collaborates with internal teams to ensure accurate campaign tracking (campaign coding, etc.) and coordinates the necessary campaign infrastructure (URL donation forms, paid media, etc.) with other marketing areas.
  • Work with various cross-functional groups to ensure continuous improvement and sharing of information across all direct response marketing programs.
  • Monitor campaign performance through reporting and analysis ensuring positive campaign ROI.
  • Supports the direct mail team by processing invoices, reconciling postage payments, managing the Functional Allocation project and Los Angeles Disclaimer process, and drafting and distributing the department's monthly campaign communication
  • Serves as the USPS operations subject matter expert for the direct mail team. Manages a complex network of PO Boxes, oversees reshipments, processes annual permit and P.O. Box payments, initiates refunds as needed, and acts as the primary point of contact for postal-related inquiries, issues, and escalations. Collaborates with production vendors to enroll ACS in applicable USPS discount incentive programs.

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE:     

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Marketing or related field.
  • 4-6 years campaign management or direct marketing experience; nonprofit experience preferred.

SKILLS:         

  • Experience with vendor relations and negotiation skills.
  • Experience managing expense and revenue budgets.
  • Excellent consulting, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills.
  • Experience in program/project management.
  • Strong analysis/problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel spreadsheets.
  • Ability to train and mentor staff.
  • Ability to work well in a team / collaborative environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, detail oriented and ability to work remotely.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of sophisticated direct marketing programs and integrated direct to consumer campaigns.

DIRECT SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

  • Reports to the Senior Director, Direct Mail

DIRECT SUPERVISION GIVEN: 

  •  None

INDIRECT SUPERVISION GIVEN:

  • Directs and manages work of multiple vendors and internal partnerships. 

INTERNAL CONTACTS:       

  • Regular contact with direct response marketing staff to discuss programs.
  • Frequent interactions with other business units to ensure content, messaging and brand standard guidelines.
  • Contact with other staff to facilitate collaborative projects and serve on American Cancer Society cross functional workgroups as necessary.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:      

  • Frequent communication by person, by phone and in writing with vendor(s), direct response industry colleagues and the USPS
  • Occasional phone and email communication with donors.

The starting rate is $71,600 to $85,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
