Tobacco Control Research Intern - REMOTE

The Tobacco Control Research group is working on a project in partnership with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to understand tobacco use behaviors and related policy and policy support among individuals living in the 13 states in the US with the highest rates of tobacco use (Project 1350). Interns would gain skills and provide support related to data management, data analyses, and assistance with literature reviews. This project provides an opportunity to be involved in developing research and policy priorities that would help reduce the burden of cancer by 50% by 2050 focusing on these 13 high risk states.

The intern will have the opportunity to participate in project development and implementation related to tobacco control research as described above, learn skills for scientific research by conducting data analyses, present analytical results to both internal and external collaborators, contribute to drafting research proposals and manuscripts, and perform other scientific activities under the supervision of senior researchers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and analyze data to evaluate tobacco control interventions, monitor outcomes such as tobacco use behaviors; write, test, and submit computer programs in Stata.
  • Assist with data management and related analyses.
  • Conduct literature reviews, assist in developing research proposals, as well as scientific writing.
  • Prepare tables and figures for scientific presentations using Excel and/or PowerPoint.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • REQUIRED: Data analysis experience. Preferably Stata, or SAS, or R programming skills in a public health research environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • PREFERRED: MPH/MS and/or PhD candidates (biostatistics/statistics/quantitative epidemiology)
  • PREFERRED: Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected through online surveys would be an advantage in this position.

LOCATION  

  • Remotely and/or American Cancer Society Office (TBD)

TIME

  • 20 hours per week in the summer and academic year of 2024-2025.

The starting rate is $15 to $18 an hour. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
