Principal Scientist, Risk Factors & Screening Research - Remote

The incumbent will join the Risk Factors - Screening Research team within the Surveillance - Health Equity Science (SHES) Department of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Primary responsibilities include conducting impactful cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance research, with a focus on historically underserved populations, including sexual and gender diverse persons and racialized groups, for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The incumbent will also participate in updating the biennial Cancer Prevention - Early Detection (CPED) Facts - Figures and providing timely provision of screening and risk factor data for other Facts - Figures publications, and to ACS senior leadership and field staffs to guide cancer control planning and measure progress. Additional duties include assisting on special projects of enterprise-wide importance and serving as an internal/external subject-matter expert on cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance research.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently analyze, interpret, describe, and discuss cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance data.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant scientific literature.
  • Effectively communicate cancer screening early detection, and risk factor surveillance research to lay and scientific audiences through writing and presentations.
  • Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts to lead/coauthor scientific articles on cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance research.
  • Respond to internal/external requests for provision and/or interpretation of cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance data.
  • Identify and evaluate new data resources and analytic techniques to conduct cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance research, including data linkage opportunities between national and state survey databases to other pertinent databases (such as those from Census, Economic or health insurance claims etc.)
  • Present data in tables and figures using Excel, PowerPoint, and Origin.
  • Document methodologies and results in a highly organized format.


FORMAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Master's or doctoral degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics, or similar field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in epidemiology/statistical/analytical work in a public health or research environment.
  • Cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance, and survey research experience highly desirable.


SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE

  • Experience in descriptive epidemiology and cancer screening, early detection, and risk factor surveillance research.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and software, including working knowledge of SAS, SUDAAN, and/or other survey software.
  • Knowledge of national and state-based health behavior surveys, including NHIS, BRFSS etc
