Managing Director, Email Marketing (Remote)

The Managing Director, Email Marketing is accountable for creating and maintaining the overall vision, strategy and execution of the American Cancer Society’s email, text and marketing automation programs. As the business owner of Salesforce Marketing Cloud, the Managing Director oversees implementation all ACS marketing automation journeys striving to cultivate meaningful relationships with constituents, generate revenue, and better service the ACS mission by improving external email practices and engagement across the organization. This leader manages a team operating as a center of excellence within the organization, responsible for creating strategic marketing campaign recommendations targeting engagement or response of primary ACS audiences – donors, patients, volunteers, fundraisers, prospects – for both Marketing-led and pillar-led initiatives. This leader is responsible for creating and maintaining the overall vision, direction and execution of the American Cancer Society’s email and text marketing programs for the enterprise - ensuring This leader is responsible for oversight and standardization of the organization’s 13+ email programs and 5+ SMS programs maintain a single voice, centralize data to cultivate relationships with constituents, generate revenue, and better service the ACS mission by improving external email practices and engagement across the organization. This role requires the deep technical expertise required to develop all aspects of campaign design and implementation including articulating and managing technical requirements, identifying defects and enhancements and articulating solutions. This includes management of both internal and external IT partners, ensuring efficiency, consistency, and accuracy of the marketing systems and processes followed across platforms and programs. And also includes technical and training documentation, ensuring compliance and honoring preferences through rigorous quality control.

This role is directly accountable for revenue and list growth, and delivering annual revenue goal for the marketing email product with responsibility of the relationship, contract management, budgeting and invoicing of all email and text strategy, production and external partners. Leading program performance KPIs, projecting costs and budget reconciliation across the national program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic leadership and oversight of the enterprise-wide marketing automation strategy and implementation, ensuring alignment with ACS’s fundraising, engagement, and mission delivery objectives.
  • Primary liaison with the ACS Legal team to ensure compliance with all channel privacy regulations, including but not limited to email marketing, text marketing, and automated journeys. Proactively monitors regulatory changes, identifies risks, and compliance.
  • Oversees the selection, development, and optimization of marketing automation tools across the enterprise, ensuring they meet evolving business needs and enhance donor and customer engagement.
  • Leads audience segmentation and engagement strategies, ensuring targeted and personalized communications that drive revenue, donor retention, and mission service delivery.
  • Accountable for leading integrated email and multichannel campaign strategies, ensuring alignment across digital, social, and offline channels to create a seamless and engaging customer experience.
  • Analyzes and optimizes program KPIs, using data-driven insights to test, measure, and refine marketing automation strategies to achieve key business objectives, including revenue growth, donor engagement, and impact expansion.
  • Identifies and champions marketing industry innovations and best practices, ensuring ACS remains at the forefront of marketing automation, personalization, and digital engagement.
  • Partners with key stakeholders across the organization to establish expectations, goals, and testing plans for email and text marketing strategies, ensuring segmentation and messaging drive maximum impact.
  • Leadership, supervision, and accountability for the Email Marketing team, ensuring compliance, optimizing workflows, and overseeing enterprise-wide training and access to marketing automation tools.
  • Manages response to customer service escalations related to email marketing, text marketing, and automated journey experiences, ensuring prompt resolution and continuous improvement in donor and customer interaction.


FORMAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Marketing or related field.
  • Marketing Cloud Email Specialist Certification required and other certifications as assigned.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:

  • 10+ years marketing experience with project management focus or relative experience.
  • 7+ years experience managing national email program for large non-profit or organization.
  • Deep experience with program level budget management and forecasting.
  • Experience with multiple Email marketing platforms (full service and self-service).
  • Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word and other project management and presentation applications.

SKILLS

  • Deep understanding of CRM data management and governance and how it drives campaign effectiveness and risk. 
  • Proven leadership skills from working with clients in an account management or consulting role.
  • Understanding of state regulations/compliance risks that govern online giving and engagement practices.
  • Proven leadership skills from working with clients in an account management or consulting role.
  • Clear and careful oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter, with strong sense of ownership, assertive follow-through, and orientation towards results. 
  • Talent for prioritizing multiple responsibilities and organizing team workload.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, adapt to change, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and constituencies from multiple organizations, and to provide strategic guidance in a collaborative, consultative, and positive manner.  
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail. 
  • Ability to build consensus and to work through others in achieving desired results and objectives. 
  • Short- and long-term operational planning skills. 
  • Expert understanding of campaign management and marketing automation tools, as well as a proficient understanding of performance metrics and benchmarks.
  • Working knowledge of all areas of Marketing Communications including creative project management, budgeting, public relations, etc.
  • Deep understanding of email and text channel industry trends.
  • Advanced writing, editing, proofreading skills and presentation skills; high attention to detail.
  • Track record of managing a multi-faceted marketing projects and budgets.
  • Knowledge of database segmentation and data logic as it applies to email files and other reports needed in support of program.
  • Proven success integrating resources across complex functions and across multiple geographies.
  • Project management experience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of marketing techniques and strategies used with customers/constituents.
  • Ability to work with varying levels of internal constituents and develop communication for various internal levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple ad hoc and long-term projects simultaneously.

The starting rate is $140,000 to $170,000 annual. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
