Associate Scientist, Epidemiology Data Analysis - Hybrid (Atlanta, GA)

**This position will be based in our Downtown Atlanta office 3-4 days per week.**

The Associate Scientist assists principal scientists in the Population Science program with research on the epidemiologic aspects of the cancer continuum: prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship. They contribute to a team of research analysts who share responsibilities for programming, statistical modeling, program review, analysis documentation, development of new study resources, and support of external collaborations. In addition, the analyst will help advance the groups collective expertise in statistical programming and epidemiologic methods through independent study, internal presentations, and written memos. The position includes opportunities for learning skills relevant to epidemiology including co-lead/authorship of peer-reviewed publications.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with ACS principal scientists to design and conduct internal research studies using American Cancer Society datasets (primarily the Cancer Prevention Study II and 3)
  • Provide statistical programming support (information, datasets, and statistical analysis) for collaborative studies with outside researchers.
  • Generate presentations and reports for internal and external use.
  • Assist in the preparation of papers for publication in the fields of epidemiology, behavioral science, and public health, including conducting scientific literature reviews.
  • Document analytic programs and data management to facilitate record-keeping and use by others.
  • Contribute to general data analysis and data management needs of the department.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE:      

  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology or a related field (Environmental Health, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, etc.) and at least one-year of statistical programming experience in analytic work, preferably in a scientific or epidemiologic research environment.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:    

  • Ability to conduct statistical analyses and interpret results using R and SAS. Ability to learn additional software and programming languages as needed (ex. Python).
  • Knowledge of epidemiologic research methods including longitudinal and survival analysis, case-control and case-cohort analysis, and/or biospecimen-related analysis (genomics, metabolomics, microbiome)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to produce high quality work independently.
  • Highly motivated with strong attention to detail and organization skills.
  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently.
  • Exceptional teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate in a cross-functional environment. 

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:

Additional skills related to bioinformatics, complex data from wearable devices, Shiny applications, Quarto, markdown, git, and/or mediation analysis are preferred, but not required.

The starting rate is $65,000 to $70,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
