The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the nation's leading cancer advocacy organization. ACS CAN seeks a highly motivated, dependable, and conscientious self-starter who is interested in pursuing a career in communications, social media and/or marketing, particularly in the non-profit and/or health policy world. Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Media Advocacy and Executive Communications Manager, you will develop and draft communications and social media content to support ACS CAN’s senior leadership team with a focus on strengthening and elevating online public personas.***This is a hybrid remote position that can be home-based with ability to work at the Washington DC office when needed. Candidates in the Washington DC area is preferred. Internship is targeted to start in Jan 2025. ***
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Help maintain social media content and engagement for ACS CAN president’s social pages and other members of the leadership team as needed.
Research and draft content and graphics for social media.
Schedule approved posts on Twitter and LinkedIn.
Identify key reporters, lawmakers, influencers and creators on social media and support engagement with those key audiences.
Support engagement with ACS CAN state social media pages and create and archive photos/content from those pages.
Engage with other relevant content across platforms.
Keep a pulse on the latest platform trends and propose ideas to propel engagement.
Analyze performance and growth metrics in order to adjust creative for optimizing posts.
Participate in larger social media brainstorms and content ideation.
Support drafting of talking points, letters and other communications for ACS CAN leadership team.
Research content, pull data and relevant information and draft copy and correspondence.
Review, update and/or create Wikipedia page profiles for key leaders.
Identify a need and create a project to support executive communications and social media to be completed and presented by the end of the internship.
Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
Understanding of the basic principles of social media, public relations and/or marketing
Ability to communicate in a professional manner
Ability to work well independently, and within a team
Must have writing experience outside of the classroom (creative blogging, school newspaper, etc)
Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Canva and social media platforms
Education/Work Experience:
Minimum 2 years of college, relevant coursework.
Intern Eligibility:
Undergraduate and graduate students must meet the following criteria:
Full-time student, completed their freshman year of college;
Have a minimum of a B average (cumulative 3.0 on 4.0 scale);
Plan to continue their education in the following term/semester (Note: an internship assignment may coincide with the student’s last term/trimester.)
Interns may be required to provide documentation of their participation in a bona-fide college or graduate school intern program under which their ACS internship either qualifies them to receive course credit OR fulfills a graduation/coursework requirement.
The starting rate is $18 per hour. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
