Venture Fellow Internship - BrightEdge - Remote

This is a fully remote position for Venture Fellow intern. 

BrightEdge is the American Cancer Society’s impact investment, venture capital and innovation arm investing in and supporting the most innovative startup companies developing novel technology-based cancer solutions to advance science, reduce disparities, and promote healthcare sustainability. 

The position is responsible for analyzing BrightEdge investment opportunities and to support future BrightEdge investment decisions. Venture Fellows will develop landscape analyses, build market and financial models, identify and interview subject matter experts and key opinion leaders, and work closely with the BrightEdge team on active deals under review. Clear presentation of findings to the BrightEdge team is critical. This position is required to communicate effectively with various stakeholders including organizational leadership and through various internal communication channels.

This is a fully remote position for venture fellow intern. 

Venture Fellows will mainly focus on diligence, data collection, and analytical tasks, including reviewing of research publications, related IP and commercial activity, industry and market trends, stakeholder interviews, and summarizing data in written reports and presentations. Outside of project-specific activities, Venture Fellows will be invited to participate in regular due diligence and evaluation meetings to learn more about how investment decisions are made and to expand network and knowledge of emerging startups in life sciences and healthcare seeking VC financing.  Below is a specific list of projects and activities in which the intern will participate:  

  • Develop an investment thesis based on a jointly selected topic that aligns with BrightEdge’s mission focus areas
  • Develop “watch lists” of emerging oncology therapeutic, diagnostic,  device and healthtech companies, based on various BrightEdge investment criteria
  • Generate actionable hypotheses and business cases for investment in ventures that deliver ACS mission to prevent, detect, defeat cancer and improve quality of lives of patients and caregivers
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews with internal and external thought leaders and KOL’s on key scientific, translational and commercial questions
  • Summarize findings in written reports and/or presentations

Formal Knowledge

Advanced degree holder or student (PhD or MD) in oncology-related field or equivalent experience in a biomedical setting combined with MBA or equivalent experience in finance, investment, or business strategy.  

  • Deep technical background in life sciences and/or healthcare technologies with strong understanding of cancer biology
  • Business experience is a plus in startup or innovation setting (venture capital, business development, technology transfer, licensing, finance, operations, consulting)
  • Self-starter and able to drive programming without much oversight
  • Flexible, comfortable with change and ambiguity; team player with low ego
  • Entrepreneurial drive and passion for biomedical innovation and its commercialization
  • Eager to learn—new topics, methods/approaches, and tools through self-learning, observation, resources, discussion with colleagues

The expected starting rate is $30.00/hr for this position. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended.
