Post-Doctoral Fellow, Behavioral and Tobacco Research

Position Description


The Fellow will design a tobacco and cannabis use (incl. e-cigarettes) research program focusing on the biological, psychological, social, and other factors predicting consumption or cessation, and/or relationships between tobacco/cannabis consumption with psychological and medical outcomes, cancer incidence, and mortality. Fellows will have access to survey data from the longitudinal Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS) cohorts. Blood biospecimens are available for analyses of genetic, metabolomic, and other biomarkers of cancer risk or protection. The CPS cohorts include assessments of stress, social isolation, social support, and quality of life, in addition to demographics, medical, behavioral, lifestyle and other constructs linked to cancer incidence, morbidity or mortality (e.g., cancer screening and health care utilization, medical conditions, medication use, anthropometric measurements, physical activity/sedentary time/built environment, dietary habits, hormonal/reproductive factors, sleep/light at night/shift work, etc.). Each post-doctoral fellow will train under behavioral and epidemiological scientists in the Society’s intramural research department to lead analyses, conduct, publish and present peer-reviewed original research.


  1. Analyze data from Cancer Prevention Study cohorts and biospecimen repository to test specific questions or hypotheses related to tobacco and/or cannabis use and cessation of use.
  2. Publish original scientific research in peer-review journals and present at professional or internal ACS meetings.


Position Requirements


Formal Knowledge

  1. PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Statistics, or related fields (e.g.,  Public Health, Behavioral Medicine, Health Psychology).
  2. Excellent working knowledge of SAS and R. Proficiency with Mplus or other statistical software programs is desirable.
  3. Excellent knowledge of epidemiologic research methods and experience in epidemiologic data analysis and interpretation.
  4. Knowledge and experience in conducting tobacco and/or cannabis-related analyses for publication.
  5. Interest in social ecological and/or biopsychosocial models of disease will be viewed favorably.


Other Skills

  1. Ability to manage multiple tasks and excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  2. Excellent analytic, conceptual, and quantitative/qualitative methodology skills and strong attention to detail.
