BrightEdge is the impact investment, venture capital and innovation arm of the American Cancer Society. We invest in for-profit, early-stage companies developing cutting-edge, cancer-focused therapeutics, diagnostics, devices, and technologies to fuel and accelerate ACS’s mission of ending cancer as we know it, for everyone. This internship provides a unique opportunity for MBA students to gain knowledge of the cancer research, policy and commercialization landscape, as well as experience in impact investing, venture capital, and entrepreneurship programming.

The position is responsible for supporting the development and growth of our cancer impact strategy and work across our investment and innovation activities, and to support existing and new impact related projects, services and products. The role will also support impact related data initiatives, thought-leadership projects and write-ups, and impact measurement and management activities. This position is required to communicate effectively with various stakeholders including organizational leadership and through various internal communication channels.

***The MBA Internship for the summer is approximately 12 weeks duration. This is a remote opportunity open to candidates in the Boston, MA area.***

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY

​This position will work with the BrightEdge to support impact as a core function and across broader products and activities. Responsibilities will include the following:  

  • Support and review impact, ESG and DEI metrics and reporting across venture capital and innovation investments and activities.
  • Work with the Investment, Innovation and Operations teams on impact related activities, write-ups and reporting
  • Conduct impact investment market research, comparative/industry analysis and information
  •  Preparation of impact presentation materials to internal and external stakeholders, governance bodies.
  • Analyzing impact opportunities, review thought-leadership summaries and write-ups and prepare summary information on fund and investments.
  • Support data collection, analysis, and build out of data tools for assessing impact opportunities and reporting
  • Conduct project and industry related research
  • Support policy and process reviews and associated reporting
  • Writing internal and external memos and preparing and delivering presentations

In addition, the MBA Intern will assist with other strategic, sustainability, and related projects to help accelerate our mission, including in areas such as strategy, operations, finance, talent, and project management.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelors degree with preference for focus or concentration in accounting, finance, business, economics or statistics;
  • 3+ years’ experience with impact, sustainability, venture capital, investment banking, private equity, corporate finance, life sciences/medicine, or some combination of such preferred.
  • Currently enrolled in an MBA or equivalent program and seeking full-time summer 2024 internship.

SKILLS

Required

  • Self-starter and able to drive programming without much oversight
  • Flexible, comfortable with change and ambiguity; team player
  • Entrepreneurial drive and passion for the mission of the American Cancer Society
  • Eager to learn—new topics, methods/approaches, and tools through self-learning, observation, resources, discussion with colleagues
  • Strong oral and written communication skills—reports and summaries; creating presentations
  • Analytical/evaluative thinker
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to organize and analyze datasets

Helpful:

  • Knowledge of life sciences and/or healthcare
  • Business experience in startup, innovation (venture capital, business development, technology transfer, licensing, finance, operations, consulting), or financial services
  • Familiarity with index or portfolio strategies and construction
